“SOUNDS TO ME LIKE SOMEONE is turning up the heat on you,” Cris said.

“You’re right,” Hunt said. “Me.”

The Secret Service agent and the Army captain walked down the front steps of Palm Beach P.D. and crossed South County Road. Ahead of them, long rows of palm trees lined both sides of the street. Pink and purple flowers clambered up arbors and over fences. A block away, the white awning of the Brazilian Court jutted into view.

“So what’s your plan?”

“We’re going to solve this case. Me and you.”

“Count me in, Captain Hunt.”

“So let me begin by asking you a question. Who commits a murder and then goes and buys shoes?”

Cris came to a dead stop. “You’ve got so much to learn, Captain Hunt.”

“Excuse me?”

“Speaking from experience, most women would kill for the right pair of shoes.”

Hunt grinned. “Right outcome, wrong scenario, Agent Cortés.”

Cris laughed that sexy laugh of hers. Hunt was doing his best to keep the Secret Service agent at arm’s length, but it wasn’t proving easy. She was much more than just a looker; she was sharp, she had a certain style, she radiated a subtle animal magnetism. And she wasn’t his ex.

Neither the time nor the place.

Cris resumed walking. “I definitely agree with you. Given the nature of the crime, a shopping spree isn’t the sort of follow-up one expects.”
